My Summer Plan

So summer is coming very soon, and I want to unveil to everyone of my plan for the first summer after I was actively involved in the tech scene.

You might think this summer is going to be full of coding for me, since I will be majority of time to work. But this is not 100% correct, here’s what my schedule will be.

I will be going to China for 40 days, from Mid-June to Late-July. I will visit the World Expo that is being held in Shanghai, China. It is a world-class important event that contains a large public exhibition where different countries showcase their latest technological, industrial and cultural innovation progress. The size of the exposition is even bigger than Olympics as well as any types of silicon-valley based events, there are total of 192 nations and 50 organizations registered for the expo. I’ve been stalking the GeeksOnAPlane group who visited East Asia recently, and what I heard about the Shanghai Expo was complete awesomeness (I wish I could go with them).

Besides the Expo, I will be going to my hometown, Kaiping, Guangdong. For those who don’t know, there are total of 750 thousands of people living oversea that originates from Kaiping, it is a heavy source of US emigrants. The construction style over there is highly influenced by American culture, because a hundred years ago, many pioneers who were poor but wanted to find a better life came to US along with tons of obstacles (including Chinese Exclusion Act, working as hard laborer on the transcontinental railroad, etc.) But instead of spending their hard-earned money on unnecessary materials, they contributed to those who were still struggling in their countryside and build some well-protected Diaolou (watchtowers) with strong concrete. This trip will definitely bring me a completely new experience beyond any types of tech-geeky stuff, and will definitely recall my childhood memories.

Furthermore, there will be something more awesome. I’ve been talking to my friend Crystal Yan, who is an ambitious student entrepreneur, non-profit advocate and is also going to China this summer. Since we’ve gotten a similar agenda, we joined the force and decided to do an awesome social-changing project that will bring Eastern traditional calligraphy into Western culture. We called in RockYourChineseName. The idea is super simple, we will handwrite your Chinese name in traditional Chinese calligraphy style during the trip, and mail it to you after you come back. It is $8.88 each (8 is a lucky number in Chinese), we will donate half of the profits to the earthquake victims in Yushu, China, and half will go on our own entrepreneurship projects, for me, it’s OneExtraLap (We will never spend the money on luxury). So if you don’t mind, head over to our website, and buy one today for $8.88 (the value is actually priceless). Also if you don’t mind, you can be our social media hero who spreads the word out. How? Just send out a tweet or use the URL http://bit.ly/chinese-name to tell your friends about us! :)

Lastly, I want to talk about the project I’ve been working on during the year, OneExtraLap. You might ask when it will be public launched, my plan right now is Mid-August, half month after I will come back from the trip. All the awesome stuff that people have been loving are definitely coming to the world publicly. Throughout the China trip, I will take some time to work on the backend infrastructure code since the current codebase is not yet as secure and stable it should be, and if things are going great, every piece will be done by the time I come back. So stay tuned everyone! Brilliant stuff coming!

Can’t wait!

Update: I am encouraging everyone to write about what they are up to for summer! Curious to hear what everyone is planning!
